The Brāhma Invitation

The Māra, lord of Samsara, is the owner of the assembly of the notables, of those who have dominion. That assembly of the notables is upset when they are made to see that they are immersed in ignorance. Like everyone. There is not much difference between the ignorant base and the ignorant illustrious. They claim that what is, is only what they see, superficial and immediate and threaten, of course, who throws the truth.

And if he can not do it, what he will try is to limit losses in his domain trying not to teach.

But a Buddha does not come to please Māra. It does not come to please the Establishment. He does not come to please the ignorant minions of death.

Collection of Medium Length Discourses MN 49. About the Invitation of Brāhma

So I heard. On one occasion, the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, the Anāthapiṇḍika monastery. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants: «Mendicants!» «Venerable sir,» they replied. The Buddha said this:

«At one time, mendicants, I was staying near Ukkaṭṭhā, in the Subhaga Forest, at the root of a magnificent salt tree. Now, at that moment, Baka, the Brahmā, had the following error: «This is permanent, this is eternal, this is eternal, this is all, this is imperishable.» Because this is where it is not born, it ages, it dies, it dies or it is reborn. And there is no other escape beyond this. « Then I knew what Baka was thinking, the Brahmā. As easily as a strong person extended or contracted his arm, I disappeared from the Subhaga Forest and reappeared in that Brahmā realm. Baka saw me go away in the distance and said: «Come on, good sir! Welcome, good sir! It’s been a long time since he took the opportunity to come here. Because this is permanent, this is eternal, this is eternal, this is complete, this is imperishable.Because this is where it is not born, it ages, it dies, it dies or it is reborn. And there is no other escape beyond this. «

When he had spoken, I said: ‘Ay, Baka, the Brahmā is lost in ignorance! Oh, Baka the Brahmā is lost in ignorance! Because what is really impermanent, not lasting, transitory, incomplete and perishable, he says it is permanent, eternal, eternal, complete and imperishable. And where it is born, it ages, it dies, it dies and it is reborn, it says that there is no birth, no aging, no death, no death or rebirth. And although there is another escape beyond this, he says there is no escape beyond this. «

Then Māra the Evil One took possession of a member of the Brahmā entourage and told me this: «Mendicant, mendicant! Do not attack this one! Do not attack this one! Because this is Brahmā, the Great Brahmā, the Unconquered, the Champion, the Universal Seer, the Bearer of Power, the Lord God, the Creator, the Author, the Best, the Beginner, the Controller, the Father of those who have been born and those who have not yet been born. There have been ascetics and brahmins before you, mendicant, who criticized and hated earth, water, air, fire, creatures, gods, the Creator and Brahmā. When their bodies broke and their breath was cut off, they were reborn in a lower realm. There have been ascetics and brahmins before you, mendicant, who praised and approved earth, water, air, fire, creatures, gods, the Creator and Brahmā. When their bodies broke and their breath was cut off, they were reborn in a higher realm. So, beggar, I tell you this: please, sir, do exactly what Brahmā says. Do not go beyond the word of Brahmā. If you do, then the consequence for you will be like that of a person who, when the lucky friend approaches, protects her with a cane, or someone who pushes the ground as they fall from the abyss to hell. Please, dear sir, do exactly what Brahmā says. Do not go beyond the word of Brahmā. Do not you see the assembly of Brahmā gathered here? ‘And this is how Māra the Evil One presented me the assembly of Brahmā as an example.

When he had spoken, I told Māra: «I know you, Evil One.» Do not think: «He does not know me». You are Māra the Evil One. And Brahmā, the assembly of Brahmā and the entourage of Brahmā have fallen into your hands; They are under your domain. And you think: «Maybe this has also fallen into my hands; Maybe it’s under my domain! «But I have not fallen into your hands; I’m not under your domain. «

When he had spoken, Baka, the Brahmā, told me: «But, good sir, what I say is permanent, eternal, eternal, complete and imperishable is in fact permanent, eternal, eternal, complete and imperishable.» And where I say that there is no birth, to grow old, to die, to die or to be reborn, in fact, there is no birth, to grow old, to die, to die or to be reborn. And when I say there is no escape beyond this, there is really no escape beyond this. There have been ascetics and brahmins in the world before you, mendicant, whose self-mortification lasted as long as your whole life. When there was another escape beyond this, they knew it, and when there was no escape beyond this, they knew it. So, beggar, I tell you this: you will never find another escape beyond this, and eventually you will get tired and frustrated. If you connect to Earth, you will be close to me, in my domain, vulnerable and dispensable. If you connect to the water … fire … air … creatures … gods … the Creator … Brahmā, you will be close to me, in my domain, vulnerable and dispensable. «

‘Brahmā, I also know that if I join the Earth, I will be close to you, in your domain, vulnerable and dispensable. If I adhere to water … fire … air … creatures … gods … the Creator … Brahmā, I will be close to you, in your domain, vulnerable and dispensable. And, furthermore, Brahmā, I understand your reach and your light: «That is how powerful Baka is Brahmā, the illustrious and the powerful.»

«But in what way do you understand my reach and my light?» «A galaxy extends a thousand times farther as the moon and the sun rotate and those who shine illuminate the rooms. And there you exercise your power. You know how high and low, the passionate and dispassionate, and the coming and going of sentient beings. from this kingdom to another. This is how I understand your rank and your light.

But there is another realm that you do not know or do not see. But I know and I see it. There is the kingdom that bears the name of the gods of the radiance of transmission. You died there and were reborn here. You have lived here so long that you have forgotten that, so you do not know it or see it. But I know and I see it. So, Brahmā, I am not your equal in knowledge, and least of all your inferior. Rather, I know more than you. There is the kingdom that bears the name of the gods full of glory … the kingdom that receives the name of the gods of the abundant fruits … the kingdom that receives the name of the Supreme Lord, that you do not know or see. But I know and I see it. So, Brahmā, I am not your equal in knowledge, and least of all your inferior. Rather, I know more than you. Having directly known the earth as the earth, and having directly known what does not fall within the scope of earth-based experience, I did not identify with the earth, I did not identify with the earth, I did not identify myself as earth, I did not identify myself ‘The earth is mine’, I did not enjoy it. So, Brahmā, I am not your equal in knowledge, and least of all your inferior. Rather, I know more than you. Having directly met the water … the fire … the air … the creatures … the gods … the Creator … Brahmā … the gods of the glow of the stream … the gods replete with glory … the gods of the abundant fruit … the Supreme Lord … Having known directly to everyone as everyone, and having directly known what is not within the scope of the experience based on all, I did not identify with everyone, I did not identify with everyone, I did not identify as everyone, I did not identify «everything is mine», I enjoyed everyone. So, Brahmā, I am not your equal in knowledge, and least of all your inferior. Rather, I know more than you. «

«Well, good sir, if you have known directly that what is not within the scope of the experience based on everything, that your words do not become empty or empty!

Consciousness that is invisible, infinite, radiant in everything, that is what is not within the scope of experience based on earth, water, fire, air, creatures, gods, the Creator, Brahmā, the gods of the radiant current, the gods full of glory, the gods of abundant fruit, the Supreme Lord, and the whole.

Well, look, sir, I’ll disappear from you! «Well, then, Brahmā, disappear from me, if you can.» Then Baka, the Brahmā, said: ‘I will disappear from the ascetic Gotama! I will disappear from the ascetic Gotama! ‘But he could not disappear from me.

So I said: ‘Well, look now, Brahmā, I will disappear from you!’ Okay, then, good sir, disappear from me, if you can. ‘ Then I used my psychic power to want my voice to do it. extend so that Brahmā, his assembly and his entourage will listen to me, but do not see me. And while invisible he recited this verse:

«Seeing the danger in the continued existence – that life in any existence will cease to be I did not receive any kind of existence, and he did not cling to savoring. «

Then Brahmā, his assembly and his entourage, with their minds full of amazement and amazement, thought: «It is incredible, it is amazing! The ascetic Gotama has such psychic power and power! We have never seen or heard of any other ascetic or brahmin with psychic power and we might like the ascetic Gotama, who has left the Sakya clan. Although people enjoy continuous existence, loving it so much, it has extracted it to its roots «.

Then, Māra the Evil One took possession of a member of the Brahmā entourage and told me this: «If you understand this, good Lord, do not present it to your disciples or to those who have left! Do not teach this Dhamma to your disciples or those who have left! Do not desire this for your disciples or those who have left! There have been ascetics and brahmins before you, mendicant, who claimed to be perfected, Buddhas fully awake. They presented, taught and wished this for their disciples and for those who have left. When their bodies broke and their breath was cut off, they were reborn in a lower realm. But there have also been other ascetics and brahmins before you, mendicant, who claimed to be perfected, Buddhas fully awake. They did not present, teach or wish this for their disciples and those who have left. When their bodies broke and their breath was cut off, they were reborn in a higher realm. So, beggar, I say this: please, good sir, stay passive, dwelling in a happy meditation in the present life, because it is better to leave this without saying. Good sir, do not instruct others. «

When he had spoken, I told Māra: «I know you, Evil One.» Do not think: «He does not know me». You are Māra the Evil One. You do not speak to me like that out of compassion, but without compassion. Because you think: «Those whom the ascetic Gotama teaches will go beyond my reach». Those who once claimed to be fully awake as Buddhas were not, in fact, completely awakened. But I am. The realized remains as such, whether or not it teaches disciples. The realized remains as such, whether or not it presents the teaching to the disciples. Why is that? Because the Realized One has renounced the impurities, the corruptions that lead to future lives and are harmful, resulting in suffering and future rebirth, old age and death. He cut them in the root, he made them like a palm stump, he eliminated them so they can not arise in the future. Just as a palm tree with its cut crown is unable to continue growing, the realized one has abandoned the impurities, corruptions that lead to future lives and are harmful, resulting in suffering and future rebirth, old age and death. «He cut them in the root, he made them like a palm stump, he erased them so they can not arise in the future.»

And so, due to the silencing of Māra, and due to the invitation of Brahmā, the name of this discussion is «At the invitation of Brahmā.»
